RSD, PTSD, and depression are all serious disorders that can cause unrelenting distress. Whether these conditions are causing you physical or emotional pain, ketamine infusion therapy can be an effective solution. Southeastern Interventional Pain Associates offers ketamine infusions to men and women living in Sandy Springs, Atlanta, Alpharetta, and the surrounding areas of Georgia.
What is Reflex Sympathetic Dystrophy (RSD)?
RSD, also known as Complex Regional Pain Syndrome (CRPS), is an extremely painful disorder that may develop as a result of injury (most commonly), surgery or disease. According to the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NINDS), RSD is “a chronic pain condition that is believed to be the result of dysfunction in the central or peripheral nervous systems.” According to MedicineNet, RSD involves “irritation and abnormal excitation of nervous tissue, leading to abnormal impulses along nerves that affect blood vessels and skin.” This chronic pain will cause unexplained, intense pain in the part of the body that has been injured, and may alter sensation or reduce motion.
How Does Ketamine Infusion Help RSD Pain?
Many chronic pain syndromes, like RSD, are caused by up-regulation of NMDA receptors in the brain. Ketamine works as an NMDA receptor blocker, providing long-term pain relief. In chronic neuropathic pain syndromes, ketamine can force the receptors to down-regulate, effectively resetting them to normal levels. Think of it as “rebooting” the brain.
Ketamine Infusion for PTSD
The stress caused by PTSD damages nerve connections, called synaptic connections, in the brain. These connections are responsible for transmitting neurons, which is how the brain processes and sends information. Without healthy synaptic connections, fewer neurons are transmitted, worsening your mood and PTSD symptoms. Ketamine infusions have the incredible ability to restore these connections in the brain, allowing their efficacy to flourish. As a result, many patients experience a reduction in their symptoms within hours of treatment. This makes ketamine infusions a viable long-term solution for PTSD.
Ketamine Infusion as Depression Treatment
Like PTSD, depression causes a loss of synaptic connections between nerve cells in the brain. Ketamine infusions can restore these damaged connections, resulting in a rapid reduction of depression symptoms. This is an ideal treatment for depression, as the results are seen within hours or days, compared to other treatment methods which can take weeks or even months to start working.
How is a Ketamine Infusion Performed?
Ketamine treatment is performed as an outpatient procedure. An infusion with IV ketamine may be performed as a treatment over the course of 2 days. The patient is continually monitored by an anesthetist.
