Headaches and migraines can arise for a number of reasons, but the solution can be much easier than you think. At Southeastern Interventional Pain Associates, we offer migraine and headache treatments to men and women living in Alpharetta, Atlanta, and Sandy Springs.
What Are Migraines & Chronic Headaches?
Headaches affect millions of Americans. The three most common types of chronic headaches are migraines, cluster headaches, and tension headaches. Each comes with its own telltale brand of pain. Migraines are characterized by throbbing pain and sometimes by other symptoms, such as nausea and visual disturbances. Migraines are more frequent in women than men. Stress can trigger a migraine headache, and migraines can also put the sufferer at risk for stroke. Cluster headaches are characterized by excruciating, piercing pain on one side of the head. They occur more frequently in men than women. Tension headaches are often described as a tight band around the head.
Botox® for Migraines
Botox® is a suitable treatment option for patients who have chronic migraines, which means 15 headache days or more per month. In fact, the more often that a patient has headache days, the more effective Botox® is. When Botox® is injected, it prevents muscle contractions and nerve signals that can otherwise cause or intensify your migraine. Many patients see a significant reduction in the number of headaches they experience, and often begin to see results after the first treatment. However, the effects of Botox® only last a few months, so you may need regular treatments to maintain your results.
Am I a Good Candidate for Botox® for Migraines?
If you experience migraine headaches more than 15 days out of a month, you may be a good candidate for Botox® treatment. The treatment will involve approximately 30 injections around your head and neck. To find out if you are a good candidate for this treatment, schedule an appointment with our office. During your initial appointment, a doctor at Southeastern Interventional Pain Associates will review your medical history and complete a thorough exam to ensure that you are a good candidate.
