What is Arm Pain?
Arm pain can occur for a number of reasons, most often due to stress or overuse. In some cases, arm pain is self-treatable with rest. In severe cases, patients may seek medical attention to alleviate pain and accelerate the healing process. Those experiencing arm pain may also experience stiffness or a reduction in mobility. Arm pain can also occur as a result of reflex sympathetic dystrophy, or RSD. This condition is also known as Complex Regional Pain Syndrome (CRPS), and is an extremely painful disorder that may develop as a result of injury, surgery, or disease. This chronic condition will cause unexplained, intense pain in the part of the body that has been injured.
Stellate Ganglion Block for Arm Pain
If you suffer from severe arm pain, especially as a result of RSD, we may recommend a stellate ganglion block treatment. This is an injection of anesthetic into the sympathetic nerve tissue of the neck. This blocks the nerves that go to the arms, and can relieve pain and inflammation and even restore mobility. This is a relatively short treatment that can produce long-term pain relief.
Other Treatments for Arm Pain
In some cases, epidural injections can be performed to alleviate arm pain. This injection contains a combination of anesthetic and steroids to help reduce swelling and pain. To find out if you are a good candidate for these treatments, schedule an appointment with our office. During your initial appointment, a doctor at Southeastern Interventional Pain Associates will review your medical history and complete a thorough exam to ensure that you are a good candidate.
